Interactive Whiteboard Lesson Plan

Overview

  • Click and drag the long vowel ay sound to make words
  • Click the instruction box for the next word, or to make Mango go flying with her friends
  • Continue clicking and dragging the ay sounds until the reading game is complete

Context of Lesson

To make ay type words by clicking and dragging the ay sound

Resources Required

Interactive whiteboard, small individual whiteboards and pens, small card (A4 pdf) with the ay sound on it, list of words (A4 pdf) from the reading game, list of words (A4 pdf) NOT from the reading game, prepared homework literacy worksheet (A4 pdf)

Learning Objectives

  • To recognise read and spell words constructed with the long vowel ay sound
  • Identify the constituent parts of the two-syllable and three-syllable words to support the application of phonic knowledge and skills

Using the Reading Game

  • Teacher to write a list of words on the whiteboard that are NOT in the reading game. Ask the pupils to read the words and to say what is the same about each word.
  • Teacher to load the interactive reading game Long Vowel Phonemes: Making Words with the ay Sound on to the interactive whiteboard. Teacher to introduce the character Mango, establish that Mango is a parrot and that she wants to go flying with her friends.
  • Together with the class, teacher to read instructions from the start page of the reading game.
  • Teacher to model clicking and dragging the ay sounds to make ay type words.
  • Play the game, selecting as many pupils as possible to click, drag and sound out each new ay word.
  • For extra fun, point out the height meter in the top right hand corner of the screen. How high does Mango go in her basket?
  • If time allows, play the reading game again, giving other pupils the opportunity to click and drag the ay sounds.
  • Hand out the individual whiteboards to the class with pens. Ask the pupils to list as many ay words from the reading game as they can remember.
  • Teaching assistant to work with the less able, encouraging them to attempt to write a few words. Teaching assistant could scribe for them if necessary.
  • PLENARY: Teacher to select pupils to read out the ay words they have written, noting that these should be words from the reading game and NOT from the list created on the whiteboard at the beginning of the literacy lesson. Ask pupils if they can think of any ay words that are not in the game and not in the teacher's list on the whiteboard. Add these new ay words to the list on the board.

Literacy Homework

On the prepared literacy homework sheet, pupils to colour outline of Mango and her basket, and to write some ay words around her.

Individual Computer / Computer Suite Lesson Plan

Interactive whiteboard, PCs or laptops, small card (A4 pdf) with the ay sound on it, small cards (A4 pdf) with words from the game on, prepared homework sheet (A4 pdf)

Learning Objectives

  • To recognise read and spell words constructed with the long vowel ay sound
  • Identify the constituent parts of the two-syllable and three-syllable words to support the application of phonic knowledge and skills
  • Use keyboard skills to compose and present work

Using the Reading Game

  • Teacher to show the class the small card with the ay sound on it.
  • Teacher to explain that the pupils will be working with words that include the ay sound. Teacher could start by providing one or two words that include the ay sound, e.g. hay, day, and ask the pupils to generate some more ay words. Teacher to list these new words on to the whiteboard.
  • Teacher to load the interactive reading game Long Vowel Phonemes: Making words with the ay sound on to the computer lab's interactive whiteboard.
  • Teacher to read the on screen instructions with the class. Teacher to then model clicking and dragging, and reading / sounding out the completed word.
  • For additional fun, teacher to point out the height meter in the top right hand corner of the reading game. How high can Mango go?
  • Pupils to play the reading game in pairs or individually depending on how many computers there are.
  • Teacher and teaching assistant to move around computers to monitor and assist the pupils.
  • Pupils to indicate when they have completed the reading game. Pupil to collect a small card with a word from the game on it. More able pupils can collect more than one card. Teaching assistant to support pupils to load a word processing programme.
  • Using the word processing programme, pupils to type one sentence including the ay word from their card.
  • Pupils that complete the task quickly could type more ay words below their sentence.
  • PLENARY: Teacher to get pupils to read words on the whiteboard list from the start of the literacy lesson and to select some pupils to read out their sentence. Explain to pupils that their homework will be to write another sentence with an ay word in it and to draw a picture about it

On the prepared literacy homework sheet, pupils to write a sentence to include a word with ay in it.
