Learning Objectives

  • Recognize and use alternative ways of spelling the phonemes already taught, e.g. oi sound can be spelt with oy
  • Begin to understand which words contain which spelling alternatives

Using the Reading Game

  • Teacher to hold up the small card with the o sound on it - ask pupils to say the sound. Then repeat with the y sound card and i sound card. Choose three pupils to come to the front of the class, ask them to hold up the cards. Teacher to pair up pupils holding the o and the y sound and explain that this now says oy, as in toy - ask the pupils to generate a few words which teacher may list on the whiteboard.
  • Teacher to pair the pupils holding the o and i sound cards and explain that these letters also make the same sound, as in boil, and again, ask pupils to generate some words, which could be listed on the whiteboard. If teacher lists words they could be covered or removed during the reading game.
  • Teacher to load the interactive reading game Long Vowel Phonemes: Making Words with the oi and oy Sound on to the classroom's interactive whiteboard - explain that pupils are going to help
  • Mango get to her nest by filling in the correct oi / oy sound to complete the words.
  • Teacher to start the reading game, model clicking and dragging the oi and oy sounds to complete words. Teacher to ensure that each new word formed is said out loud / sounded out.
  • Encourage the whole class to participate.
  • Teacher to select pupils to come, one-by-one, to the interactive whiteboard to click and drag oi and oy sounds - include as many pupils as possible.
  • PLENARY: At the end of the reading game, teacher to choose two pupils to come to the front of the class and hold a card saying either oi or oy. Now select an individual to say a word they remember from the game, ask the class to decide whether it is an oi or oy word, and then that pupil to come and stand by the correct card. Play for about five minutes and then count which sound has the most pupils.
  • Show class the list of words from the reading game and tick off those that were remembered.
