Interactive Whiteboard Lesson Plan

Overview

  • Click and drag the long vowel oi sound to make new words
  • Click the instruction box for the next word, or to make Mango go flying with her friends
  • Continue clicking and dragging the oi sounds until the reading game is complete

Context of Lesson

To make oi words by clicking and dragging the oi sound

Resources Required

Interactive whiteboard, individual whiteboards and pens (or paper and pencils), small card (A4 pdf) with the oi sound on, small card (A4 pdf) with the word coin on, list of words (A4 pdf) used in the game, prepared homework literacy sheet (A4 pdf)

Learning Objectives

  • To recognise, read and spell words constructed with the long vowel oi sound
  • Identify the constituent parts of the two-syllable and three-syllable words to support the application of phonic knowledge and skills

Using the Reading Game

  • Teacher to show the class the small card with the oi sound on it, a coin and the other small card with the word coin on it. Ask the pupils to say the word coin and to point to the coin word card as they say it.
  • Teacher to load the interactive reading game Long Vowel Phonemes: Making Words with the oi Sound on to the classroom's interactive whiteboard. Read the on-screen instructions with the class and explain that before they help Mango fly, they need to think of some oi words that might help her.
  • Allow a few minutes for the class to generate some oi words (teacher could start this process by saying the words coin and point) and list them on the whiteboard.
  • Once a few oi words are listed, teacher to model clicking and dragging the oi sound to make new oi words.
  • Allow the pupils to play the game by selecting them one-by-one to come to the interactive whiteboard to drag the oi sounds. Play the reading game more than once in order to include as many of the class as possible. Encourage the whole class to participate by sounding out the newly formed oi words.
  • At the end of the reading game, pupils to check how many of their words were in the game.
  • PLENARY: Give out the individual whiteboards and pens to the pupils. Teacher to scribe a sentence on the whiteboard (or type on the interactive whiteboard) and ask pupils to complete the sentence on their whiteboards, e.g. the girl had a very loud -----, or, I waited for the pan to ----.
  • Teacher or teaching assistant to work with less able to scribe or sound out the word.
  • Finish the lesson by reading through the list of oi words.
