The are two ‘does it make sense’ lesson plans below, one for using with an interactive whiteboard and the other for using with pupils and individual iPads, Chromebooks or computers. Both are targeted at KS1 learners.

Interactive Whiteboard Lesson Plan

Overview

The following gives a quick overview of steps for using Zara’s reading game with this does it make sense lesson plan.

Learning Objectives

The lesson plan aims to achieve the following learning objectives.

  • To expect reading to make sense and check if it does not
  • To reinforce and apply pupils’ word-level skills through shared and guided reading

Using the Reading Game

  • Teacher to begin the lesson by loading Zara’s ‘Does it make sense?’ reading game on to the interactive whiteboard.
  • Teacher to explain that Zara is dreaming of rockets and that they can help her dreams come true by reading and understanding the sentences.
  • Start the game and ask pupils to read both sentences. Teacher to ask pupils if both sentences make sense.
  • Teacher to ask an individual pupil to read out the sentence that is correct. Teacher to ask another pupil to use the coloured whiteboard marker to put a ring around the wrong word in the other sentence.
  • Choose another child to click on the sentence and then to click and drag the rocket part up to the puzzle.
  • Repeat this for all 6 pairs of sentences, involving as many pupils as possible.
  • Teaching assistant should be sitting with less able pupils and encouraging them to read as many words as they can.

PLENARY

When finishing this lesson plan discuss with the class ways for reading unknown words, e.g. sounding out, leave a gap, read on and re-read.

Draw Zara’s rocket travelling through space and write one sentence about it.


Individual Computer or iPad / Computer Suite Lesson Plan

Resources Required

When using this does it make sense lesson plan with individual pupils then the following resources are required. Does it make sense reading game, interactive whiteboard, individual computers or iPads, rocket picture cards (A4 pdf)

Learning Objectives

The lesson plan aims to support the following learning objectives.

  • To expect reading to make sense and check if it does not
  • To reinforce and apply pupils’ word-level skills through shared and guided reading

Using the Game

  • Teacher to load Zara’s ‘Does it make sense?’ game on to the interactive whiteboard.
  • Teacher to explain that Zara is dreaming of rockets and that they can help her dreams come true by reading and understanding the sentences.
  • Start the game and ask pupils to read both sentences.
  • Teacher to choose an individual child to identify which one makes sense. Ask another child to point to the incorrect word in the other sentence.
  • Teacher to model clicking on the correct sentence and then dragging the rocket part up to the puzzle.
  • Explain to pupils that they will now complete the game on their individual computers or iPads (or in pairs if not enough computers).
  • Before starting, remind pupils of ways of decoding unknown words (sounding out, reading on and re-reading).
  • Teacher and teaching assistant to ensure that Zara’s ‘Does it make sense?’ game is ready to play on the pupils’ computers.
  • As pupils complete the game, they collect a rocket picture card (A4 pdf) from the teacher and can then move on to the next game, e.g. game 2 or 3 etc. Teaching assistant to assist. These extra reading games are available at Club Roy.
  • Teacher and teaching assistant to move around computers working with less able pupils, so that the game can be completed and they can receive a rocket picture.

PLENARY

When coming to the end of the lesson this does it make sense lesson plan suggests a short plenary session for consolidating the learning. Making sure that each child now has a rocket picture card, teacher to load another (un-played) Zara’s ‘Does it make sense’ game on to the interactive whiteboard. Pupils to identify correct sentence by holding up their rocket picture card when the correct sentence is read out.
